Our Heritage

The Beginning (1883-1940s)

Founded by John Woods Bartholomew in Chichester, we began trading horse forage, malt, and hops. After WWI, mechanical transport opened new opportunities, expanding into garden seeds, grain, and animal feeds.

Growth & Innovation (1940s-1970s)

Our Portfield mill became our headquarters until 2019. Post-WWII agricultural investment led to pioneering work with ICI on seed treatments, establishing our certified Seed Testing Laboratory in 1954.

Modern Expansion (1980s-Present)

  • 1979 - Established trial plots for independent variety testing

  • 1995 - Founded Churchill Bulk Services for grain logistics

  • 2004 - Acquired Shoreham port facilities

  • 2013 - Launched Ultimate Fertilizers at Southampton

  • 2015 - Opened Warminster office for South West coverage
