Monday Market Briefing - 4th August 2025

Harvest pressure is visible in all wheat markets as favourable weather in US keeps progress ahead of average for this date. At home we have an improved forecast now for this week especially in the south where a lot of the rain looks set to miss us. We might catch some showers but where we miss them ten dry days now would probably wrap things up across the region – Kent has caught the worst of the early harvest weather and there are some reports of lost Hagbergs in Skyfall.

Generally results through the lab are very good if a bit variable , we await the spring crops now to see how they have fared. It looks like being the highest nitrogen malting barley crop we’ve had for some time with some losses off the higher end of the scale helping to shrink our export availability this year. The French crop this year is big enough to compensate for any UK losses but attention this week might swing to Scandinavia where there is a lot of rain around and most of the crop still in the field.

Base prices look extremely range bound now with no real prospect of anything moving the dial until 2026 plantings loom. Expect  markets to keep testing the lows as long as harvest continues to progress well in most areas.

Have a good week.
