Monday Market briefing - 26th July

Markets are choppy and sideways as everyone tries to second guess the northern hemisphere harvest.

Most of south-east England endured an extremely wet weekend which will further hold things back as well as adding to the markets general feeling of nervousness about quality. The winter barley so far cut is ‘fair average quality’ but nothing more, bushel weights are lower than last years crop. Delays to the French wheat harvest are preventing early cargoes loading – many of these are destined for the UK and whilst some have arrived the tightness in old crop UK wheat continues and prices remain near the highs.

A lot of grain is travelling greater distances than normal at the moment and lorries will be in great demand as harvest gets going. If you need to move grain this harvest speak to your farm trader in good time, arrange for sampling as soon as it’s in the barn and this will give us the best opportunity to place parcels to the right homes in a timely manner.

Have a good week and stay safe.
