Autumn grass reseeding

There are many advantages to reseeding, particularly when it comes to an autumn re-seed. However, choosing to reseed in the autumn should be dependent if it fits in with your system.

Look at the performance of the existing leys – are there any that are not getting grazed as much as other fields? Less yield? An easy way to monitor growth and therefore yield and productivity is to use a plate meter. Fields that are not productive, have high weed burdens or less that 50% of the sown species should be considered for a re-seed. A productive, well managed pasture can provide the cheapest form of feed for livestock.

The fields that are not performing as required should be picked out for a re-seed or an over seed if a short term boost is required. Once an area has been established, they key factor is to create a fine firm seed bed to get the new ley of to the best possible start. A soil test will help determine any nutrient deficiencies.

Choosing to reseed can offer the chance to change the ley used, clover can be included or omitted, a short term high yield or an herbal ley to increase diversity.

Take a look at what type of mix you are looking at using – does it contain clover? Are the grasses quick to grow once established? This gives the opportunity to maximise productivity from the same field.

Looking at the different species in a mix can help make the decision based on your requirements. Grass is a versatile forage, for both grazing and conserving. Creating a mixture of different species offers more flexibility with end use and the ability to fit in most situations. For example, adding timothy in for palatability and the ability to grow in colder wetter conditions; adding clover in for its nutritional value and benefits the soil; adding cocksfoot will be beneficial for more slightly drought tolerance.  Italian Ryegrass offers a short-term mix that will produce the bulk, ideal for silage. Comparatively, a longer-term mix, with Perennial Ryegrass can be used for either cutting or grazing, with persistently good yields.

The balance of Tetraploid to Diploid grasses will also need to be considered. Tetraploids offer increased palatability with increased sugars and more upright growth, perfect for cutting and grazing. Diploids are more persistent with higher dry matter.

The flow chart below can help make your choice of which type of mix you require.
