Where possible, harvest should be closely followed by light cultivation to encourage weed germination.
Remember to achieve a quality seedbed (exactly what is needed in a stale seedbed situation) you need to consolidate to conserve moisture and allow even germination of problem weeds including black-grass.
Variety choice, seedbed preparation and ensuring good seed to soil contact are all paramount in getting OSR off to a good start. There is a range of seed dressings that encourage early growth coupled with a Nitrogen/Phosphate fertiliser in the seedbed and with well-timed early nitrogen should get the crop off to a rapid start. Crops need to be monitored closely during the early establishment phases so pyrethroid applications can be planned in conjunction with early post emergent herbicides.
